Discipline: A Day with Ms. Torian

The assistant principal has allowed me to handle discipline problems in the school.  Under her leadership, we discussed behavioral issues with this particular student.  The student actually choked another student knocking him unconscious because he hit him.  I talked to the student, and he really didn’t understand to what degree he injured the student.  He did not get suspended, so he was placed with me for In School Suspension.

As the student and I talked, I learned that he was really respectful.  He actually said his grace prior to eating lunch.  I thought that was good thing.  We discussed his behavior and strategies to use instead of choking a student because he bothered him.

Behavior is a major concern in the schools.  It is up to the adults to monitor and set the expectations of a school event.  I was surprised to discover he was In School Suspension, but this does not happen regularly.  In School Suspension is a good system to use in the schools.  The students do not miss instruction, and they are in a location in the building that  is secluded from other students.  Students realize “Hey, this is boring! I do not want to come here again.”

I have not seen this student since this incident.  I’m pretty sure he learned his lesson spending a day with Ms.  Torian.
